Job search is just like dating. It really is. It’s all about compatibility, being available at the right time/place, and taking initiatives to making the first approach.

Swipe right to “date” the companies?

Just like dating, if you get rejections from companies it doesn’t always mean that there’s something wrong with you, your resume, or your application. Sometimes, there just isn’t a good fit. Sometimes, you just didn’t apply for the right role at the right time. Sometimes, there’s someone else who’s a better fit.

Compatibility

What does “a better fit” mean?

It can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Just because you’re more technically qualified than the next candidate it doesn’t make you a better candidate for the job. The other candidate may be asking for lower salary, is available sooner (or later, in some cases), or gets along better with the team members.

Overqualified

In some cases, candidates get rejected for being “overqualified”. Why do companies do this? Overqualified candidates have a higher risk of not being satisfied at the job and will only stay at the company for a shorter period of time.

What does a rejection mean?

If you get rejected by a company, it simply means that they could not find a suitable position for you right now. Things change all the time, they might have a role in the future that better suits you.

What should I be looking for?

Picking the right role

Your next role should bring you one step closer to achieving your longer term goal.

For example, if you are currently an individual contributor and your long term goal is to become a manager, then you should be looking for a team lead job.

Picking the right company

Look for a company that you’re excited about. It really helps make your job that much more enjoyable!

For example, if you are a vegetarian, don’t work for a butcher shop.

Picking the right team

Be sure to pick a team with teammates that:

  1. You get along with
  2. You can learn from

Recruiters = Matchmakers

Some people go to matchmakers to find love. Job seekers go to recruiters to get matched with companies who are hiring.

Recruiters are super helpful to your job search. They can cut your job search effort and time in half!

Look at it this way: recruiters are in constant contact with hiring managers. They have a lot of information about open roles at many different companies. When you’re applying to roles through a recruiter, your resume get in front of the other applicants who applied online, on the company’s website. That’s because the recruiters can get your resume in front the right person, immediately.
