I use the self-hosted version of HipChat (HipChat Server) as my team’s main communication/group messaging platform.

Many people are having difficulties connecting their mobile or desktop clients to HipChat. Atlassian does have a how-to page on how to do accomplish this, but many found it to be quite difficult to understand. Let me make a visual guide on how to connect to HipChat server.

First: find server address

When you receive your invitation email:

and click on the Join button, it will open a page:

The Server Address is anything before /activate/. Keep this in mind for the next step.

Desktop Clients

Click the Get Started button on the lower half of the page.
